Linkage & Undercarriage

Perhaps there is no other area of the car that can be as frustrating as linkage and undercarriage.

When you take the linkage apart, it is filthy dirty and encrusted with 50+ years of dried grease and road tar. You'd better remember how it came apart or you are guaranteed to have problems when you reassemble your car. I took the top 4 photos with that in mind - to help me in case I forgot. I did have one additional advantage - our other coupe "Lucy 2" was there to look at also.

As to the undercarriage, this is where you can get dirty to your hearts content. I got at least two 5-gallon buckets full of dried grease & road tar off the frame - mostly forward of the drive shaft. Putty knives, wire brushes and skinned knuckles followed by every conceivable solvent I could find. This kind of work MUST be done outdoors or in a thoroughly vented workspace. Some of those solvents can lay you low! Just ask me.


I will try hard to forget the hours spent brushing, cleaning and painting the frame and underside of the body.

After many hours, it is possible to have the frame and undercarriage clean enough to eat off of - but by the time you get it that way, you're so tired and dirty yourself that a nap sounds beter than a meal.

At about this time, you're so tired of scooting around on your back that it becomes one of those moments that define your involvement in this crazy project.
