THE LEGACY CONTINUES - March 24, 2008
The Old Plymouths site is now “under new management” as
Bill told you last month. My name is Steve, and I will be working on this site
along with my son, Rich, who was also introduced to you last month. If you think
the site looks the same, you’re right. That was the whole idea — a smooth
transition. Just a little about us: we became interested in old Plymouths back
in 1999, while searching for an old car to fix up and drive. We made it official
by acquiring a 1950 Special DeLuxe Club Coupe early the next year. You see, we
agreed that we liked the ‘49-’52 generation the best. I guess they reminded me
of the Plymouths, De Sotos and Dodges our family had during the years I was
growing up. Rich and I soon learned that Plymouths had the same basic straight
six engine from 1942 onward. Even after the first Plymouth V-8’s arrived in
1955, the old six was still made until the last year of the decade. I’ve heard
the six dismissed as dull, unexciting and old fashioned, but it has also been
called bulletproof, dependable and hard to kill. So, while the site is still
aimed at the '49-'52 Plymouths, we realize there is a lot of carryover to the
'53-'54 cars, and there's certainly a lead-in from the postwar models. We don't
want to shut anyone out. We’ll soon be offering you some new ways to ask and
answer questions, post repair procedures, place an ad to buy or sell an item, or
share the ongoing story of your car. In the meantime, you are welcome to contact
me at steve@oldplymouths.com.
A NOTE TO ALL MY FRIENDS - February 23, 2008
THE "OLD PLYMOUTHS" WEBSITE IS NOW UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. The web host "BIGSTEP" that I have used since 2000 to build and maintain this site has been sold to another web hosting company, necessitating a change to a new web hosting server before the end of March, 2008.
Steve Conover, of Shillington Pennsylvania and his son Rich have agreed to convert the website and keep it going. Saturday, February 23, 2008 was my last update. It has been a wonderful ride and I am grateful for the many, many friends this website has brought to me over the past 7 years. I'm not selling our cars and intend to be active in the hobby. Please continue to contact me if I can be of any assistance. I do not contemplate changing my email addresses, which are oldplymouths4952@comcast.net and billward1720@comcast.net.
The Owners Registry was cleaned up on 2/21/08 and anybody who had not contacted the site within 2 years was dropped, as were their photos. If you wish to be added back and your photos reposted, contact Steve.
Steve will receive the list of "Feature Cars" that are in the queue, together with their "Glamour Photos". He will also receive a complete copy of my photo archives, containing over a thousand photos of 49 - 52 Plymouths.
All links to other websites were tested and corrected, where necessary, on 2/22/08.
Any emails relative to postings to the site will be forwarded to Steve while he and Rich are converting it. Depending upon how much time it takes for conversion, the site may not be updated for a few days.

FEATURE CAR - Ernie & Diana Acosta-Rivera of Wichita Falls, Texas take great pride in is their black P-17 2-Door Sedan, all original and unrestored. They love driving it, cruising slow and enjoying the scenery. It is so relaxing! They also own 4 sports cars and a couple of rods but this is their favorite ride by far. (6 February 2008)
click here to see more of this month's feature car.
|
Note: If you would like your car featured, send a "glamour" shot of the car alone, with an uncluttered background. There are usually 6 - 10 cars in line for this spot at any given time and they are featured in the order that the glamor shots arrive.
NEW REQUIREMENT (8 March 2006) - ALL FEATURE CARS MUST HAVE A PAGE TO BACK THEM UP! This means that at least 5 photos must be available for a separate page to be linked from the feature car. When people see the feature car, they usually want to see more than one photo.
CLICK HERE TO SEE PRIOR FEATURED CARS ON THE "HALL OF FAME" PAGE.

This is your site. It will get better as time passes if viewers will e-mail their contributions to me. The number of responses thus far has been very encouraging.
This site will be biased toward 1949 through 52 Plymouths. Since I have many friends with 46-48 and 53-56 Plymouths, their participation is also welcome. There are several excellent websites already for 46-48 Plymouths (see links). If 53-56 fans want to put up a website, I would be happy to help them, to my limited ability.
If you want to submit photos, see the "Contact Us" page for instructions.
Also, I encourage you to take a look at some of the Yahoo Club automotive sites, particularly the Plymouth/Mopar sites there. The Yahoo sites have bulletin boards but I really don't like the site formats myself and since I expect this to remain a rather narrowly focused site, don't think an active bulletin board is a big thing. I recommend the Discussion Group/Forum on the Plymouth Owners Club website and think it would be a unwise to fragment this great service. I also strongly recommend the P15-D24 website as a great source of information. I will, however link to any other bulletin boards pertinent to 1949-1952 Plymouths. I will post any comments e-mailed to me (even unflattering ones) as long as the language is OK.
I try to add links and photos within 5 days of their submission by viewers but cannot always do so. During cruising & show season, I give priority to my cars, not this website - hope you understand. If you do not see your submission in a reasonable amount of time, I won't be offended if you send another email to jog my memory. "The squeaky wheel gets the grease"

About Links in This Website -
Selecting links for this site has been and continues to be difficult. It seems that every day or so, someone recommends yet another site for me to check out. As I check out one, I find that it links to another, and another ..... I do not rank them - the ones on top are not recommended any higher than the ones on the bottom.
There seem to be a number of types of websites:
1. The lone wolf site where a guy just wants to put his car(s) up for the world to see. Some of these are excellent and some, well...... - These sites I link on the "Interesting Links" page but may have some excellent links to parts sources.
2. The Club site such as the WPC and Plymouth Owners Club. These sites are frequently updated and have the support of a large group of members. These sites are usually found on the "Parts Sources Page". Some of them, however may be found on the "Interesting Links" page.
3. The Vendor site where the vendor is trying to connect with guys like you and me who are looking for specific hard-to-get parts. These sites are usually found on the "Parts Sources" page.
4. Sites like Oldplymouths who are trying to focus in on a specific model year or two. These may be found on either of the links pages.
In trying to select which sites to link to, my first criteria is "Will this site raise interest in '49 - '52 Plymouths?" Second, "Will this site be of help in locating parts?" Third, "Will this site help novices like me to actually undertake the work needed in restoration?"
Many times, the line between the types of sites will be very fine and you may wonder why I put them where I did. Sometimes, I wonder too.
The bottom line is that you should explore each link thoroughly to see where it leads you. All I can do here is to try to filter down the number of places you have to wade through. Each link may lead you to many others that may be as good, or better, than the ones I list.
One last thing, and I wish I didn't have to mention it, but as a grandfather I won't link to any site that I would not want my grandchildren to visit when they go on-line to look at "Grandpa's Cars". This has already ruled out two, otherwise, excellent websites.

Although I am a member of both the Plymouth Owners Club and the Walter P. Chrysler Club, this website has no formal affiliation with either club. I do recommend that the viewer check into membership in either/both clubs as they are extremely helpful to the owner/restorer of old Plymouths. - Bill
