Brady & Peggy Layman of Kennewick, Washington have restored their P17 Business Coupe as a replica of the car that was Lee Petty's first successful race car in the first season of NASCAR. Nice job!
Brady credits Les and Eric of Les' A-1 Auto for the fine mechanical and electrical work and George and Rob at Kennewick Auto Body for some outstanding bodywork.
Brady writes: "I first learned that Lee Petty had campaigned a '49 Business Coupe while I was in college. One night I got bored researching a project and found myself browsing some old volumes of Time Magazine and found one from 1949 saying Lee Petty had won a race in the same make and model I was driving at the time. After that I always referred to my Plymouth as 'my race car'. When I was contemplating getting the car running again after being parked on the farm for 25 years, I read Jim Benjaminson's article "Racing the Rock" in the Plymouth Bulletin, May-June 1995, Vol. 36, No. 4. That was when I really started to think of making mine a replica of that car that literally got the whole Petty Racing dynasty started. Some of the details of the stories change. One story said he actually had more than one '49 Plymouth coupe. I've found a picture of a black car but most show a white coupe." Following the photos are some of the links Brady found regarding "Pappa Lee" and the car.
Thanks Brady!
